According to the Euro international News news agency : Germany’s Der Spiegel reports that the Federal Ministry of the Interior apparently wants to bring up to 5,000 Afghan refugees to Germany annually as part of a plan to accept Afghan refugees. The plan is still being debated.
The German Interior Ministry made the statement in response to a questionnaire from the German parliament. The letter states that this figure seems “operationally feasible”.
The German federal government has agreed to this in its coalition agreement. The aim is to get people in danger, such as journalists or teachers, in Germany after the Taliban return to power in Afghanistan.
This is the first time a specific figure has been published in this field. “Civil society organizations such as the Kabul Air Bridge alone support more than 3,000 people and report tens of thousands at risk,” said Julian Palke, a member of the German Green Party in parliament. “The families of those at risk must also be accepted,” he demanded.
Palka said talks were under way with the interior ministry about the amount of the plan. Apparently, the main issue right now is who should be considered a family member at risk. According to him, depending on how the family is defined, the program can reach a total of over 100,000 people.
In Germany, first-degree family members include the couple and their children under the age of 18, and in the case of minors, their parents include the family.
The German Ministry of the Interior has announced that work is currently underway on key parts of the program.
