The memorial funds for Dermot G. Bowler, a 1946–1982 Massey Agricultural College (later Massey University) employee, and the funds generated in 2011 from rebates on Ravensdown fertilizers purchased by Massey University’s farms were merged to establish this scholarship. Postgraduate students pursuing studies in soil science, particularly those focusing on soil fertility and soil water management, are supported by the Bowler Ravensdown Scholarship in Soil Science.
