Ghent University is offering Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South in 2026 for PhD degrees in any subject of study (with a preference for North-South related research).

Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must be citizens of specific Global South nations.
- Candidates must have recently enrolled in the university’s PhD program.
- Only those who want to pursue a joint PhD at the university are eligible to apply.
- The award is not available to applicants who have been identified as exchange students.
- The supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University and a supervisor at the partner university (South) must submit the proposal alongside the applicant.

- The following advantages are given to promoters at Ghent University:
- The bench costs €310 a month.
- The student’s travel expenses, along with those of Ghent University and the local promoter, are partially covered by the €8,000 travel fund.

- records of research findings;
- a formal declaration about the co-financing of the candidate’s doctoral studies at this university from a legitimate representative of the partner institution.
The supervisor at Ghent University needs to turn in the following paperwork:
- A recommendation that expresses the supervisor’s assessment of the candidate’s potential as a future researcher
- A recommendation about the proposed research project’s ethical and biosafety setting
