The Aga Khan Foundation’s International Scholarship Programme (AKF ISP) is an opportunity for outstanding scholars from selected countries, who have no other means of financing their studies, to pursue postgraduate education.
Since its founding by His Late Highness Aga Khan IV in 1969, the AKF ISP has provided support to over 1,500 students. A worldwide, yearly, and competitive application process is used to choose award winners. There are just a few new awards available from the AKF ISP every cycle. The award cycle for 2026–2027 is currently open.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Madagascar, Mozambique, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, and Uganda are among the countries where the AKF ISP is accessible. Applications from people who are originally from one of the aforementioned nations are allowed in places like Canada, Portugal, and the USA. Students who want to study in Russia or the United Kingdom are now unable to use the AKF ISP.

Eligibility Criteria:
- demonstrate genuine financial need**;
- have excellent academic records;
- hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent training/professional experience;
- be admitted to a reputable postgraduate institution;
- be starting the first year of the programme; and
- demonstrate a thoughtful, reliable, multi-source funding plan that covers all years of study;
- have strong leadership potential, professional experience, extracurricular and/or entrepreneurial achievements, and volunteer contributions.
Advantages:
- Both living expenses and tuition are covered by the grant. For instance, it doesn’t cover living expenditures for family members, clothing, furnishings, or the price of traveling abroad.
- Throughout your postgraduate program, you must maintain both strong academic standing and continuous financial need in order to keep your AKF ISP award.
- AKF ISP awards are structured as half grant and half loan – where you need to repay 50 percent of the award amount.* Scholarships for Master’s studies are granted for the entire duration of the degree course. For PhD students, scholarships are awarded for the first two years, after which you are expected to find funding from alternative sources.
- The award agreement must be co-signed by a guarantor. For instance, it doesn’t cover living expenditures for family members, clothing, furnishings, or the price of traveling abroad.
