Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) 2026 is offered for Masters degree in the field of All courses offered by the university except Law.

The application must be submitted by December 1st, 2026. This scholarship is offered by Leiden University and is only worth up to €19,000 in tuition costs. Non-EU/EEA nationals may apply for this scholarship.

Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS)

Eligibility criteria –

  • Study Program Requirements: Open to students applying for a full-time Master’s program (excluding Humanities, LLM non-advanced, and MSc programs at Leiden Law School).
  • Nationality: Non-EEA/EFTA students (except for some specific programs such as LLM Advanced Studies, MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy).
  • UK students are also eligible.
  • Academic Requirements: Applicants must have excellent academic results, typically ranking in the top 10% of their previous study program.

Benefits/Value –

  • The LExS covers partial tuition fees. Award levels are:€10,000, €15,000, €17,500, €18,500, or €19,000
  • Note: The scholarship does not cover full tuition fees, and recipients are still required to show proof of sufficient funds for a student visa.

Application Process – 

  • Admission Application: Apply online for a Master’s program at Leiden University and pay any applicable application fees.
  • Scholarship Application: After submitting the admission application, go back to the “Apply” screen and click on “Scholarships” to apply for LExS.
  • Motivation Letter: Upload a motivation letter (max. 500 words) explaining why you are applying.
  • Deadline: Submit your application by the scholarship deadline.
  • Late applications will not be accepted.
  • Selection: Faculties will nominate scholarship recipients, and applicants will be notified by the end of April.
